Methodist Healthcare Ministries Backs Digital Opportunity in the Rio Grande Valley

The Texas Rio Grande Valley Broadband Coalition is gaining momentum in its mission to bridge the region’s digital divide, thanks to receiving $398,720 in support from Methodist Healthcare Ministries. This funding will help accelerate the coalition’s efforts to implement the region’s new Broadband and Digital Opportunity Plan, which aims to expand infrastructure, improve digital skills, and increase broadband access for all residents, ensuring communities across South Texas have the connectivity they need to thrive.

The RGV Broadband Coalition is a regional network of local government leaders, community organizations, healthcare institutions, foundations, broadband construction firms and providers working to expand access to digital technology and promote economic opportunity. The MHM grant will strengthen the coalition and position it for long-term success.

Investing in Connectivity for Health and Opportunity

Methodist Healthcare Ministries has long recognized that access to high-speed internet is a super social determinant of health and a prerequisite for educational and economic opportunity. On the South Texas Border, a persistent-poverty region, many communities struggle to access broadband. This investment is a step toward ensuring that all residents have affordable high-speed broadband and the tools and knowledge to reap the social and economic benefits of internet access.

“At Methodist Healthcare Ministries, we believe that access to high-speed internet is essential for health, education, and economic opportunity,” said Jaime Wesolowski, President & CEO of Methodist Healthcare Ministries. “By supporting the Rio Grande Valley Broadband Coalition, we’re investing in a stronger, healthier South Texas where every resident has the tools and connectivity they need to thrive in today’s digital world.

Strengthening Regional Collaboration

Methodist Healthcare Ministries’ support will enable the RGV Broadband Coalition to grow and engage its membership and implement strategic programs identified in the region’s broadband connectivity plan. The goal is to catalyze further funds to expand digital infrastructure and digital opportunity programs, and support coalition sub-groups working on workforce development, telehealth, and fostering small business digitalization.

“We are incredibly grateful to Methodist Healthcare Ministries for its commitment to the region’s digital ecosystem development,” said Ricardo Saenz, Program Manager at Connect Humanity. “This grant will serve as a foundation for greater investment and stronger partnerships, ensuring the region has an effective, aligned strategy to close the digital divide. With MHM’s support, we unlock the creativity and entrepreneurial energy of our people to build a better, healthier future for the Rio Grande Valley.”

We look forward to sharing updates as we work together to bring digital opportunity to every community in the region.
