Appalachia Digital Accelerator

Red Bird Mission

Red Bird Mission is an anchor institution and resource for families in one of the most rural and economically depressed areas of Kentucky. Recognizing that digital access is essential for education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, the Mission has developed a Connectivity Plan with support from the Appalachia Digital Accelerator. This plan aims to address gaps in broadband infrastructure, affordability, and digital literacy, empowering residents with the tools needed to thrive in the digital economy while fostering community resilience and economic growth.

In order for our community to not be left behind, and begin to thrive in a world that is increasingly connected, we are seeking reliable, affordable broadband that provides opportunities for economic growth, education and healthcare.

Few residents in Red Bird’s footprint have reliable internet access. For those who do, it is often prohibitively expensive. This Connectivity Plan outlines a strategic approach to addressing digital needs across the Mission’s three county area. A core focus will be partnering with ISPs to improve network access and affordability. Additional initiatives include the development of a community hub for digital skills training, providing telehealth resources, and focusing on workforce development. The plan serves as a roadmap for Red Bird’s vision to create lasting opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic growth.

8Mbps

Ookla speed test show residents in Red Bird’s service area can expect download speeds of 8Mpbs — far below the 100Mpbs standard for broadband.

ISP Partnerships

Red Bird seeks to partner with an ISP to build a fiber middle-mile network to connect community institutions and provide affordable service to residents.

What’s next

Thirty members of the Red Bird Region Broadband Action Team have worked to shed light on the importance of connectivity in the lives of those living in this corner of Appalachia. By developing relationships with internet providers and private partners, we are exploring ways to fund the expansion of affordable, reliable internet into the rugged terrain that has been a barrier to expansion in the past. Our underserved communities will benefit from the ability to access telehealth, long distance learning, and much needed economic opportunities through remote work.

Unreliable connectivity meant a health emergency at Red Bird High School could have ended in tragedy.
