The Whitfield County Connectivity Plan outlines a comprehensive approach to addressing broadband challenges by expanding fiber-optic networks to unserved and underserved areas, prioritizing both overhead and underground deployments for reliability and reach. The plan includes efforts to improve affordability and digital literacy, ensuring all residents can access and benefit from high-speed internet. By fostering public-private partnerships and leveraging state and federal funding opportunities, the plan aims to build a robust digital infrastructure that supports economic growth, education, healthcare, and community resilience.

Almost a century ago the New Deal brought electricity to Appalachia and rural America. A national effort was necessary as distance and sparse populations impeded free market expansion. The resulting availability of electricity to all Americans paid vast dividends through greater economic activity and quality of life. The same opportunity exists today through expansion of Broadband Internet access to all corners of Appalachia and America. By doing so we enrich individuals and communities and in turn create a wealthier, smarter, and better America.

Working with older adults every day, I understand how critical internet access and affordability are to them. Being comfortable with technology is also a significant concern. I hear their stories and see the need firsthand. I am excited that our connectivity plan is bringing attention to these issues and helping to provide solutions.

What’s Next

Whitfield County’s next steps on its broadband journey include pursuing recertification as a Georgia Broadband Ready Community and hosting digital literacy training programs, with the first round scheduled for early 2025. Additionally, the county plans to establish a Citizen Advisory Group to guide future initiatives and create an asset map highlighting locations with free internet access to support residents and businesses.
